Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's side into third place in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils duties at each end of the field

After a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only attempts on goal, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, combining well with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have worn off slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two established strikers - had netted just one league goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped threatening balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
